Interview with Nate Garrett, Guitarist and Vocalist from Spirit Adrift
Hi Guys, I ended up finding this email in the deep, dark depths of my never-ending list of emails. And I am super excited that I found it! Spirit Adrift is an amazing band and I actually went and saw them perform at the Aftershock Festival. I got this email on July, 22nd. SO this is a total my bad, but hey. I found it, so that's what matters.
Spirit Adrift is labeled as a Doom Metal band, hailing from Pheonix, Arizona. They are currently signed to the 20 Buck Spin Lable and have been rapidly raising the ranks and gaining traction in the metal scene. Which is part of why I feel like such a nincompoop for not realizing that Gmail has a setting to display oldest emails, rather than the 75 most recent which I thought were my only emails.
illiteracy and/or stupidity aside, the following content is an interview with the Guitarist and Vocalist of the band Spirit Adrift, Enjoy!
What makes your music unique, what sets you apart from the other bands?
The music I make is the culmination of all my life experiences, musical and non-musical. No one else could create it because no one else has the same life experiences as I do. Everything I've struggled with, overcome, learned, and experienced is present in this music.
What are your influences?
Life, trying to figure out the meaning of everything, and Black Sabbath.
What was a defining factor in choosing how your music would sound?
Do you have a mentor? Who is it?
Chuck Schaaf from Deadbird. I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for him.
Tell me one genre of music that you do not understand.
If I'm being totally honest, jazz.
Tell me one genre of music that you can't stand to listen too.
EDM or Dubstep or whatever it's called now. I'm not even sure if it still exists. But statistically speaking, I actually can't stand to listen to most artists/bands in most genres. I probably only like about .0001% of the music that's ever been made if you really think about it.
Where was your favorite place that you performed a show at? Where would be a place you'd dream to perform at?
Write some advice you would give to your future self.
There's plenty of advice I'd give to my past self. According to my current trajectory, my future self is probably going to be much wiser than my current self, so I'm not sure I have any advice for a dude that is smarter and more worldly than I am.
What is your favorite song from your band
Specter of Ruin from the Behind - Beyond EP is the first Spirit Adrift song I ever wrote and it's incredibly meaningful and special to me. We only ever played it once in Denver and probably won't play it again. Some other favorites are Divided By Darkness, Angel & Abyss, and The Way Of Return. There's a song on the upcoming EE album that's my favorite song I've ever written, but I can't talk about that yet.
What is your favorite song in general? And on top of that, what if your favorite band to listen too?
Are you a person that is usually on time, late, or early?
Almost always early.
Name one time you have broken the rules, what did you do and why did you do it?
I made a rule for myself at a young age that I would break at least one law every single day that I'm alive. At LEAST one. If you want a more specific example, I have a policy that I do not stop at red lights in Canada. I don't believe in it.
What was your dream job when you were you were younger?
I really wanted to be a shepherd but I can't herd anything worth a shit, so I am stuck in this hellish existence of playing heavy metal for a living.
Name something that makes you uncomfortable, pet peeve, phobia, etc. and explain why.
People. Just look at all the things people have done to one another, to themselves, to animals, to the beauty of this planet, and that doesn't require an explanation.
If you could go on tour with any band or artist, who would you go with? (You can list more than one)
Metallica. Slayer got shook and retired, and took out Primus of all bands on their last tour so they're out of the picture. So yeah, I guess we're left with Metallica. Or Judas Priest. Really hoping Dave Mustaine has a full recovery and gets back on the grind, because I would love to play with Megadeth as well. I think we would go well with Ghost too.
What is the nastiest or worst thing that has happened to you during a show, before a show, or after a show?
Food poisoning in Europe.
Tell me about your most recent Album.
Listen to it and I'll let the music speak for itself.
What is our favorite track off of the album?
Divided By Darkness, Angel & Abyss, or The Way Of Return
What was your inspiration and your influences on this album?
David Goggins, Glenn Tipton, Dimebag Darrell, George Jones, and anybody that works at something until they physically can't do it anymore, and then they keep going.
Tell me about your future plans for music.
I'm going to keep writing and releasing the best music I'm capable of making.
Are there any special plans music-wise you want people to know about?
As you can see, with that last comment being invalid by last weekend, this was relatively old. But either way, be sure to check out their new music and follow them on social media, I'll leave links below so you lazy humans don't actually have to make an effort to type in Spirit Adrift and search it up yourselves.
